Learning my lesson
I think I am starting to catch on. I was asked to speak in church yesterday and given the spot of the last speaker which means taking up 20 minutes. It did not scare me because Ben helped me find some great information and I felt really prepared and ready to take the stand. The subject I was given was "A Word for the Hesitant Missionary" a talk by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf. Fantastic man of God, great talk and a good subject. The problem was...........too much information and no jokes. I really don't think people come to church to learn, they come to get out of the house, meet friends to get the latest gossip, take naps and to be entertained. Most people don't bother to read the lesson before hand or even bring their scriptures.
We have found a similar problem with the JoVos, they do bring scriptures but are not bothering to really study on their own. A casual glance of the scriptures really does not give them the knowledge they need to keep them strong. We played a game that required teams to answer gospel questions and the only answers came from one returned missionary and us. The questions were really not that difficult, I'm sure our grand children could have answered most of them because they are getting family home evening and scripture study.
It's my turn to teach in Relief Society again next week and that usually turns out fine probably because we are not really delving into the scriptures that much with the lessons given to us in the manual. If they do ask me to speak in Sacrament meeting again I will just have to learn a few jokes and tell a story or two that will somehow tie into the scriptures and the gospel. Anybody have any new spiritual "knock knock" jokes that might come in handy?
