Downtown Antwerpen

One of our friends in the ward is Resy who was born and raised in Antwerpen. She took us on a walking tour of the downtown area. Some of the buildings and cobble stone walk ways go back to the 14th century and it made me realize that "back home" aint that old. If we were to show some of our pioneer homes to the locals here they would just laugh at the term "old" We went into this small alley that now has several eating joints and a couple of pubs. Ben found this pump in the corner of the alley and just had to try it out. Nope, no water but a great picture.

We could see that once upon a time the homes had some space in between but as the years went by the empty space was needed so they just added a home in the alley way. Now they are all attached houses and businesses. One home is just as wide as a doorway and a small window, so not much room for living when you realize that a stairway had to be added which was the same width as the door. The living area of each floor is only about as big as my bathroom at home.
So my question is, why do I need so much room for all my 'Junk" when these people can exist in such a small place? We have seen bathrooms that are so small that you simply sit on the toilet to wash your hands in this camper size sink and you also just sit there and turn on the shower head directly over your head. Just don't confuse the flushing handle with the shower knob or you get your clothes washed at the same time. Hey, if it works, great.

I love the planter boxes hanging all over town. Not much room for a garden so the boxes work well, I have even gotten a couple for our place. My balcony is only about a foot deep and just about wide enough for me to squeeze by and water the geraniums. Of course they have to be bright red because those are the ones I remember my grandma having when I was little and lived with her in Den Haag for a while. Every time I smell a geranium I am reminded of her and how I loved spending time with her. I'm sorry my brothers did not get that chance.

O.K. Rach, now I have to explain. When I was very young my mother decided that I should live with my Grandma.(I was probably a brat) My grandma had an old place with no toilet so one was constructed in the corner of the kitchen with a door across the front of it. While sitting on the "pot" there was not enough room for the door to close so it had to stay open while we were in there, since it was right next to the window sill of the kitchen, we could enjoy the geraniums. Also, it did not have a flusher so we had to dump a pitcher of water down the toilet when finished. Oh the good old days!! I love you anyway Rach, Your mom
