Woerden, Nederland

Today we went to our missionary pep rally (otherwise known as Zone Conference). It was held in Utrecht, North East of Rotterdam. We were really looking forward to a nice scenic 90 minute drive. Well with "File" (Rush hour traffic) every few kilometers it took us more than 3 hours to get there. Not a problem right? Left in plenty of time, gas tank full, water bottle in your lap, GPS punched in and just sit back and enjoy the scenery, only there was no scenery to be had. We had mist all the way. We could not even tell when we hit the border. When conference was over we thought we would head back a different way. We love just driving around and ending up in some pretty nice new places. When we happen to see the sign for "Woerden" we headed straight for it. Ben's dad was born in Woerden and lived there until he was a teenager and left to go work in a printing shop. We have a pen and ink drawing of the quiet little village where he spent his youth and we were really looking forward to strolling along the canal with the cute little boats anchored to the banks. Well..................That little village has turned out to be a congested town with more cars, bikes and pedestrians than you can imagine. Not like the drawing at all. We were able to snap a couple of pictures of the old tower and the church. We could not even find a parking place so I just had to take the shots from the car. Some of the homes look like they could have been around in 1914 when he was born, but the rest looks very modern. I still want to think of the place as being quiet and peaceful, with no cars around anywhere. I know grandpa would not have liked this new place at all. He would probably not even have been able to find his way around.
