I love old churches and Friesland (name of the province in which Leeuwarden is one of the towns) has it's share of them. Some of these go back for centuries and are still standing. Not many people attend church here but most of the buildings are still used for some church services. The church bells still chime on the hour and half hour. I love the sound of them and will never get tired of hearing them. Some of the Muslim communities have insisted that the bells no longer chime. They also insisted that the state build them a mosque and allow people to be called to prayer five times a day, the state said O.K. and done deal. I remember hearing the "calls to prayer" when we were in Egypt and Jordan and I actually liked it. Sometimes we could see men stop in the middle of traffic and roll out a prayer rug in the middle of the road to pray.
