In the 1500's a prominent builder was hired by the church here in Leeuwarden to build a church and a tower. He started on the tower, but did not bother with a firm foundation. When the tower was about a third of the way up, it started to sink on one side. No problem, just build the rest of it straight up and no one will notice right? Well, two third of the way up it started to lean again so he started leaning the tower again. Finally the builder was fired and the church was never built, but no one wanted to tear down the tower. I'm surprised it is still standing after all this time. We have seen a lot of buildings here that are leaning. One of the old wives tales is that the leaning houses were build that way on purpose so that when furniture is pulled up with a hook from the roof top and passed through the window on the upper floors, it won't bang against the walls going up. Sure, and the leaning tower was built so that children could drop rocks down to people below.
