Goodbye 2012

One tradition here in the Netherlands is "oliebollen" every New Years Eve.  We have seen stands all over for the last two weeks.  This is one treat that really brings back memories.
Basically the oliebollens are deep fried yeast batter much like the Belgium waffles.  Here the best way is to add chunks of apple and current or raisins.  They are then sprinkled with powdered sugar.  I wish they would sell them all year but that would take the fun out of the anticipation each year.   Ben's mom never made them but she made "apel flappen"  She would slice apples and dip them in batter and fry them in oil.  Most people try to find someplace other than the kitchen such as a back porch or balcony to fry everything because it can really smell up the house.
